A Brief History of Wind Power and Vela Gear Systems.
When the ancient hero Jason sailed in search for mythic treasures, he charted his course by a constellation known as Vela.
We chose the name “Vela” for Vela Gear Systems, not just for the wonderful story, but because wind power, represented by the ancient constellation, guides us far beyond the course of legend. In Persia and China, windmills rotated around a vertical axis to irrigate crops and grind grain. Mediterranean engineers rotated the design onto its side and utilized a horizontal axel for more efficient milling; the increased grain production helped Europe exit the Dark Ages. With light in mind, Charles F. Brush invented the original wind power-plant more than a century ago—his small Cleveland company would merge with Thomas Edison's to later become one of the world's largest corporations. The wind literally drives peoples worldwide into increasingly ambitious, and successful, ventures.
Modern wind power is a form of renewable energy. The sun heats the Earth’s atmosphere, creating a differential in air pressures; the atmosphere balances itself by moving air from areas of higher pressure to areas of lower pressure. This differential pressure and its resultant movements are the scientific description of wind. Air friction against the ground and vegetation dramatically slows the wind; due to this friction, wind speeds are typically much stronger at greater heights than they are near the ground. Major topographical features such as mountains accelerate local wind currents. Thus, in North America winds sweep from the Rocky Mountains across the Great Plains, providing a vast reserve of wind power. As T.B. Pickens says, “North America is the Saudi Arabia of wind power.”
Vela Gear Systems is a new manufacturing company equipped to supply gear components for large wind power farms. Vela will employ folks right here in Indiana; we will harness the power of the wind from the crossroads of America. We will provide new jobs in the Midwest, create safe, renewable energy for future generations, and propel the United States towards energy independence.
The founders of Vela Gear Systems together have 100 years experience working with the legacy gear manufacturers in North America. The founders set up the only serial production facility in the U.S. for large wind turbine gears. That first facility was based upon the combined knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and large gear-cutting processes.
Today, the founders are combining that knowledge and experience with the latest world class machine tool technologies, enabling the highest quality and scale production for the ever-growing wind power plants of the future. And perhaps most importantly, Vela Gear Systems will produce key gear components in North America, for North America, all the while delivering the most advanced and cost effective manufacturing available.
Discover the power of Vela Gear Systems. The heart of wind power turbines and the circulating supply of turbine gears are found here in the American heartland.
The US economy will rebound. Americans will continue to seek sources of energy free of pollution and foreign reliance. Vela Gear Systems will meet these future challenges. Vela will once again lead the way to a new, prosperous world.
